Madeira, "The Island of Flowers" was the title by which the Island is known abroad for many years. Due to its location, this island was an important port of call on the routes between Europe and the African and American continents.
On arrival, tourists were surprised on the streets of Funchal by florists selling flowers and later would learn of the important connexion between locals and flowers as each house is filled with lots of flowers that fill the air with unique aromas.
The Flower Festival is one of Madeira largest festivals a tribute to the special liaison of its residents with flowers and springtime, and intends to promote the wealth of flowers that colour, perfume and inebriate the environment in order to reinforce the islands notoriety abroad.
This tribute will take place in May, so appropriately entitled the "month of flowers". Madeira Tourism is the official promoter of the Flower Festival, an event that intends to marvel tourists and residents alike by giving it a genuinely innovative character and also by prolonging the celebrations over a longer period of time.
Young people dressed with costumes depicting flowers will parade along the central walkway of Avenida Arriaga. The famous flower carpets will be made and you can admire the flower sculptures adorning the entire area. The traditional flower exhibition will take place at Praça do Povo, followed by the usual Flower Market held in Avenida Arriaga, enclosing the city centre in a unique ambience of Nature's fragrances. Alongside various other events, this celebration culminates with the construction of the Wall of Hope by the children of Madeira and also with the grand flower festival parade.

The flower market contributes to raise public awareness to the countless ornamental and floral species on the island. Visitors and locals can buy them in a picturesque setting.
Flower Exhibition and Workshops
The Flower Exhibition is held in the centre of Funchal, at Praça do Povo. This exhibition is an extension of the exhibit held at the former Ateneu Comercial of Funchal. This unique flower display shows the finest flowers grown with much care and devotion, all around Madeira. The flowers in display are judged under various categories and the best are awarded prizes by a panel of experts.
In addition the Praça do Povo will also be the centre stage of several workshops and crafts exhibits.
Flower Carpets and Decorations
The abundance of the local flora specimens and the great religious devotion of the people of Madeira greatly contributed to the establishment of this art form. The flower carpets traditional assembly thrives all over the island and culminates in the decoration of the routes in which religious processions take place, an activity that involves the entire community.
Due to their undeniable beauty and detail, for some years now, the flower carpets have been reproduced on the streets for the Flower Festival festivities and are a major contribution to the magnificence of the city's decorations, alongside the floral sculptures. Their delicate creation is shared and admired by tourists on visit to the island.
These wonderful pieces of floral art are displayed in the central walkways of Avenida Arriaga.
Madeira Auto Parade
The Regional Secretariat of Economy, Tourism and Culture and Madeira Tourism Board will promote the " Madeira Auto Parade" an event that culminates the Flower Festival festivities, held in May, 14th at 3.30pm. Organized by the Association "The Classic Motor Exhibition" - ACME and the Clube Carocha da Madeira, this enterprise intends to join both the glamour of classic vehicles and motorcycles, alongside with the flowers of Madeira, incorporating one of the largest exhibitions, and national restoration and elegance contests, an opportunity to admire some of the best vehicles and auto parts.
The event's itinerary will be similar to the Flower float parade starting at Praça da Autonomia, Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses (south lane), til Francisco Sá Carneiro roundabout, passing at Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, till the roundabout of the Port of Funchal, where the participating automobiles will be in display until 10pm.
The Madeira Auto Parade integrates 400 vehicles including 150 motorcycles, which will circulate in pairs a parade filled with moments of pure entertainment, colour and beauty with performances by various musical bands and pageants dressed in costumes inspired by the flowers of Madeira.
This event intends to recreate a former parade held in Funchal between 1980 and 1990.
